Branislava Duranovic-Scheluchin has more than 20 years of experience working as a teaching artist. She has offered instruction to art students of all ages and abilities in variety of educational environments including K-12 public schools, community art schools, art studios, galleries, as well as private one-on-one tutoring. Branislava has been very fortunate to work as a teaching artist for Studio in A School for the last nine years. Teaching for Studio has been a tremendous learning experience in which she gained new insights into art teaching methodology that very successfully merges art practice with literacy. This methodology not only enables students to develop manual skills in a variety of visual art mediums, but also understand concepts in other subjects such as mathematics, social studies and sciences. Branislava obtained a M.F.A. in Painting from Pratt Institute, which engrained in her both historically traditional methods of creating art as well as an awareness in honing her own creative approaches. Somewhere within her experiences as a practicing artist and an art instructor resides her teaching philosophy. Branislava is a hands-on-teacher who believes that basic visual art skills can be learned and cultivated, and that art teacher’s task is to point out the existing shortcuts, inspire curiosity, and build students’ confidence. Art making process promotes cognitive development of children as they are encouraged to produce, rather than reproduce the knowledge. Art making initiates development of critical thinker - the one that not only owns information, but also knows how to follow up or act on it.
